What Is Chiropractic, and Where Did It Come From?
Chiropractic was founded in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer, who performed the first documented chiropractic adjustment on Harvey Lillard, a janitor who had lost much of his hearing 17 years prior following an injury. Palmer observed that a vertebra in Lillard’s upper back was misaligned and, after adjusting it, reported that Lillard’s hearing improved.
The origin story is humble. The science that has emerged in the 130 years since is anything but.
Today, chiropractic is practiced by more than 70,000 doctors in the United States. Chiropractors complete a four-year doctoral program — comparable in total hours to medical school — with intensive training in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, diagnosis, neurology, and spinal biomechanics. They are licensed in all 50 states and recognized by major health insurance plans, Medicare, and the Veterans Administration.
The Central Idea: Your Nervous System Runs Everything
Here is the foundational principle of chiropractic, expressed in plain terms:
Your nervous system — your brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves branching from it — controls and coordinates every function in your body. Your heart rate, digestion, immune response, hormone production, tissue healing, and muscular coordination all operate under constant nervous system direction.
Your spine is the primary structure housing and protecting your spinal cord and nerve roots. When spinal joints are properly aligned and freely mobile, the nervous system communicates efficiently. When they are misaligned, restricted, or dysfunctional — what chiropractors term a vertebral subluxation — that communication is disrupted.
Think of it like a garden hose. When the hose is straight and unkinked, water flows freely. Bend it at the wrong angle and flow is diminished, regardless of how much water pressure you apply.
Chiropractic identifies and corrects subluxations — restoring normal joint mechanics and, by extension, more optimal nervous system function. The effects extend beyond where the adjustment was applied. This is why patients often report improvements in conditions they didn’t come in for: better sleep, improved digestion, fewer headaches, reduced anxiety. These are not coincidences. They are the predictable results of a nervous system freed from chronic interference.
What Does a Chiropractic Adjustment Actually Do? 
The chiropractic adjustment — also called spinal manipulation — is a precisely controlled, therapeutic force applied to a specific spinal or extremity joint. The goal is to restore normal movement to a joint that is restricted or misaligned.
When you hear that characteristic “pop” during an adjustment (which not all adjustments produce), you’re hearing a phenomenon called cavitation: the rapid release of dissolved gases from the joint fluid as pressure within the joint briefly changes. It’s harmless, and it’s not the adjustment itself — it’s a byproduct of the sudden change in joint space.
What the adjustment actually does, at the tissue and neurological level:
- Restores joint mobility: Breaks up adhesions within the joint capsule, reduces fibrosis, and allows the joint surfaces to glide through their normal range of motion.
- Reduces pain: Stimulates mechanoreceptors in the joint that, through gate control mechanisms, inhibit pain signal transmission. This is why patients often feel immediate relief.
- Resets neuromuscular patterns: The altered sensory input from a properly functioning joint changes the motor output from the brain — reducing protective muscle spasm and restoring normal movement patterns.
- Reduces local inflammation: Research has documented reductions in pro-inflammatory cytokines following spinal manipulation.
- Improves proprioception: The joint’s sensory receptors — which tell your brain where your body is in space — function more accurately, improving balance, coordination, and movement efficiency.

Is Chiropractic Safe?

The risk of a serious adverse event from chiropractic care is extremely low. A 2007 systematic review in Spine estimated the rate of serious complications from lumbar spinal manipulation at approximately 1 in 3.7 million. Serious complications from cervical manipulation are similarly rare.
For perspective: taking over-the-counter NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen) is statistically far more dangerous than receiving a chiropractic adjustment. NSAIDs are associated with thousands of hospitalizations and deaths annually due to gastrointestinal and cardiovascular complications.

There are conditions — certain fractures, unstable ligamentous injuries, some vascular conditions — that require modification of technique or referral. These are identified in our intake process.
