Not every back needs a quick, forceful adjustment. Flexion-distraction is a gentle, low-force approach used by every chiropractor at Cooper Chiropractic, and it's especially helpful when discs or nerves are involved.
How It Works
You lie face down on a specialized table. As the table slowly flexes and extends at the waist, your chiropractor applies light, targeted pressure where you need care. There's no thrust and no twisting. We follow the Cox Technic protocol, a structured approach designed to take pressure off irritated discs and nerves and restore normal motion to the spine.
What We Use It For
- Disc bulges and herniations
- Sciatica
- Pinched nerves (radiculopathy)
- Facet syndrome (irritation of the small joints along the back of the spine)
What the Research Shows
In a randomized clinical trial of adults with chronic low back pain, patients treated with flexion-distraction reported significantly more pain relief than those in an exercise program. Results varied between groups of patients, which is why we tailor every treatment plan to the person in front of us. (Gudavalli et al., European Spine Journal, 2006)
What to Expect
Flexion-distraction is part of a regular chiropractic visit, so there's no separate appointment to schedule.
