Chiropractic Care for Children: What It Is, Why It Matters, and What the Research Shows

July 28, 2026  ·  7 min read

When parents first hear about chiropractic care for children, the reaction is often the same: Really? Kids need that?

It’s a fair question — and the answer, once you understand what chiropractic care actually does for a developing nervous system, usually surprises people.

Children are not simply small adults. Their spines, nervous systems, and musculoskeletal structures are in a state of rapid development — a process that is profoundly influenced by the forces placed on the body from birth onward. Understanding this helps explain why chiropractic care is not just appropriate for children, but uniquely valuable during the developmental years.

The First Subluxation: Birth

The journey of chiropractic care for children often begins at the very beginning: birth.

Modern obstetric practices, even in uncomplicated deliveries, place significant mechanical forces on the neonatal spine and cranium. The process of navigating the birth canal, combined with the traction forces sometimes applied to assist delivery, can produce vertebral misalignments — particularly in the upper cervical spine — that affect neurological function from day one.

Dr. Monika Buerger, DC, DACNB — a diplomate of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board and a leading authority in pediatric chiropractic and neurodevelopment — has written and lectured extensively on this subject. Her framework emphasizes that the nervous system is the master coordinator of all developing biological systems, and that disruptions to normal sensory input, including those caused by spinal subluxation, can have downstream effects on neurological development, immune function, and behavioral regulation.

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), the leading professional organization supporting research and education in pediatric chiropractic, notes that early neurological assessment and spinal care can support healthy development and may help address a range of common infant conditions.

Why Children Benefit from Chiropractic Care

The developing nervous system is extraordinarily plastic — highly responsive to both positive and negative input. Chiropractic adjustments in children provide precisely the kind of positive, organized sensory input that the nervous system needs to develop optimally.

Here is what pediatric chiropractic care addresses at Cooper Chiropractic Center:

Colic and Digestive Issues

Infantile colic — persistent, unexplained crying in an otherwise healthy infant — is one of the most common and distressing conditions in newborns. Research suggests that subluxation of the upper cervical spine can affect the vagus nerve, which plays a central role in regulating digestion and the gut-brain connection.

Multiple studies have examined chiropractic care for infantile colic, including a randomized clinical trial published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics that found significant reduction in crying time in colicky infants treated with chiropractic compared to a control group.

Pediatric adjustments for infants are extremely gentle — no more pressure than you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato. They bear no resemblance to adult spinal manipulation.

Ear Infections (Otitis Media)

Recurrent ear infections are the most common reason children visit a physician in the United States, and one of the most common reasons antibiotics are prescribed. Yet research shows that up to 80% of ear infections in children resolve without antibiotics.

A contributing factor in many cases is dysfunction of the eustachian tube — the drainage tube connecting the middle ear to the throat. The musculature and neural control of eustachian tube function is influenced by the cervical spine, particularly the upper cervical and suboccipital regions. Chiropractic care that restores normal cervical mechanics may improve eustachian tube drainage, reducing the fluid accumulation in which bacteria and viruses thrive.

Importantly, we coordinate with your child’s pediatrician. Chiropractic care for ear infections is an adjunctive strategy, not a replacement for appropriate medical management when indicated.

Torticollis and Positional Head Preference

Congenital muscular torticollis — where an infant’s head is consistently tilted to one side — and positional head preferences (always turning to the same side) are common findings in the first months of life. Left unaddressed, they can affect feeding, visual development, and the formation of flat spots on the skull (positional plagiocephaly).

Gentle chiropractic adjustments of the cervical spine and cranial structures, combined with specific stretching guidance for parents, are highly effective in restoring normal range of motion and resolving torticollis when addressed early.

Developmental Milestones and Neurodevelopment

Dr. Buerger’s work in chiropractic neurology and sensory-motor integration offers a compelling framework for understanding why spinal health matters for child development beyond the musculoskeletal system.

The developing brain organizes itself through sensory experience. Movement, proprioception (the sense of body position), and vestibular input (the sense of balance and spatial orientation) provide the raw material from which the brain builds its functional architecture. When spinal subluxations alter the quality of proprioceptive input — substituting aberrant, disorganized signals for the clear, ordered signals the developing brain needs — they can affect neurological development in ways that may manifest as sensory processing challenges, coordination difficulties, attention difficulties, or behavioral dysregulation.

This is not a claim that chiropractic treats attention deficit disorder or autism spectrum disorder. It is a recognition that optimizing the neurological environment through spinal care may support the developing child’s capacity to organize, integrate, and respond to sensory experience — and that this has value across the spectrum of child development.

Back and Neck Pain in Children and Adolescents

Back pain is increasingly common in school-age children — driven by heavy backpacks, prolonged sitting, and the epidemic of device use that has children looking down at screens for hours each day. Chiropractic care addresses these postural and structural contributors directly.

Athletic adolescents present with sports injuries across a wide range of activities — from football and soccer to gymnastics, swimming, and dance. Our practitioners are well-equipped to evaluate and treat these injuries with age-appropriate techniques.

Is Chiropractic Safe for Children?

This question deserves a direct answer: Yes — pediatric chiropractic is extremely safe when performed by a qualified practitioner.

The forces used to adjust children are dramatically different from those used for adults. Pediatric adjustments involve light, precise pressure — carefully calibrated to the child’s age, size, and condition. Infant adjustments involve roughly the same pressure as gently pressing on a closed eyelid — enough to feel, not enough to cause discomfort.

A large-scale survey of pediatric chiropractors published in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies found that serious adverse events in pediatric chiropractic are exceedingly rare. Minor post-adjustment soreness, the most common adverse event in adults, is even less common in children, who typically respond quickly and positively to care.

The ICPA maintains a robust research program supporting the safety and efficacy of chiropractic care for children. Their evidence base continues to grow.

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Visit

Your child’s first visit at Cooper Chiropractic Center begins with a comprehensive health history review — covering birth history, developmental milestones, current complaints, and health goals. We take time to understand your child and your family’s context.

The examination is gentle and non-threatening. For infants and young children, much of the assessment happens with the child in a parent’s arms or lying comfortably on the table. We explain everything we find in plain language.

We recommend bringing your child’s health records if available, including any relevant birth history (particularly if there were assisted delivery techniques such as forceps or vacuum extraction).

Your Child Deserves to Thrive

We believe that chiropractic care is not just for people in pain — it is for people who want to function at their best. For children, that means supporting the developing nervous system with the same intentionality we bring to nutrition, sleep, and movement.

If you have questions about whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your child, we welcome the conversation. Call Cooper Chiropractic Center in Vancouver, WA at 360-693-3030. We see patients of all ages and would love to support your family’s health.
