Conditions We Treat

Herniated Disc

A herniated disc is a serious but very treatable condition. The majority of patients avoid surgery with the right conservative care — and chiropractic is central to that.

Herniated Disc

Between each pair of vertebrae in your spine sits an intervertebral disc — a fibrocartilaginous cushion that absorbs shock and allows movement. When the outer layer of a disc is damaged or weakened, the inner material can push outward, potentially compressing nearby nerves. This is a herniated disc — and it can be extremely painful.

Symptoms vary depending on the location of the herniation. In the lumbar spine, a herniated disc often causes sharp, radiating pain into the buttocks, leg, or foot — known as sciatica. In the cervical spine, it may produce neck pain, shoulder pain, and radiating arm symptoms. In either case, the pain can be severe and the impact on daily life significant.

How Chiropractic Helps

Chiropractic care for disc conditions focuses on restoring proper spinal mechanics, reducing nerve irritation, decreasing inflammation, and supporting the natural healing process. We use specific, low-force techniques — including flexion-distraction and instrument-assisted adjustment — that are appropriate for disc injuries and do not place excessive stress on the affected area.

We also integrate rehabilitative exercise to strengthen the muscles that support the spine, reducing the likelihood of re-injury. For patients with severe disc pathology, we coordinate care with referring physicians and, when imaging is warranted, help facilitate that process.

The majority of disc patients respond very well to conservative care and avoid surgery altogether. Early intervention is key — the sooner treatment begins, the better the outcomes tend to be.
